LAWBREAKING: Before we tell you how to make a good turkey sandwich, we shall fulfill the wishes of Smooth's Sports Grille owner John Morris, who suggests we write a column about the confusing crossing lights at the intersection of Broadway and Pine Avenue. He was standing at the intersection with a cop recently, watching us jaywalk, which was easier for us than dealing with the cockamamie light (plus, we hadn't seen the cop).

Both the restaurateur and the police (who didn't cite us for the infraction. Where's a cop when you need one?) thought we should write about the intersection. Instead, we thought we'd write about the dangers of jaywalking downtown, inasmuch as our recent archival strip-mining uncovered today's accompanying photo from 1960, during a safety campaign waged by the Long Beach Safety Council, Sertoma Club and the Long Beach Police Department.
