When Australian Finance Minister Peter Costello told immigrants last year to either respect Aussie democratic principles or go back to where they came from, he apparently had the backing of his countrymen in general and government officials in particular. His tirade was aimed at Muslims who prefer living under Sharia law. Said the minister, "You don't have to swear at the football and eat a pie to be an Australian, but you do have to believe in democracy, the rule of law and the rights and liberties of others."
The Muslim community was not pleased. A spokesman accused the government of singling out Muslims, and said that Muslims do respect the law of the land and its values. The Aussies are still rightly angry at an Islamic terrorist bombing of a night club on Bali in 2002 in which more than 180 people were killed and hundreds wounded.
