Speak Out On 'Noose'

Summary


A noose, hanging from a tree, is a vile reminder of hundreds of blacks' deaths at the hands of white mobs. It is the ultimate symbol of racists' hatred toward blacks. A noose symbolizes mob violence against blacks. There is no mistaking it for a childish prank or an insensitive gesture. People who hang nooses from trees, professor's doors, subway trains and other public places know exactly what they are doing. They know what the noose represents. And so does everyone else. The noose is not just a word. It is a symbol of violent hatred.

Yet, the American Civil Liberties Union is sitting on the fence as Congress debates whether to classify the noose as a hate crime. Our local U.S. congressional representative, Laura Richardson, has introduced a bill that would criminalize the noose. Citing laws in Europe that criminalize hate speech, Richardson wants to go a step further and criminalize nooses.
