For years various agencies in the U.S. government have been urging Americans to eat less saturated fat, which is high in calories and can cause heart disease. So why is the Agriculture Department partially funding an organization that urges Americans to eat more cheese -- a food that is high in saturated fat and calories?
The organization, called Dairy Management, gets more than $6 million from the USDA; the rest comes from dairy farms and other groups linked to the dairy industry. Its most successful effort has been to perk up Domino's Pizza sales by putting 40 percent more cheese in its pizza. Other fast foods, such as Burger King's Cheesy Angus Bacon cheeseburger, also earned the blessing of Dairy Management. The Burger King offering has two slices of American cheese, a slice of pepper jack and "a cheesy sauce," according to a USDA analysis quoted in The New York Times.See the full content of this document
