Summary


It's no accident that the Long Beach Unified School District is among the top districts in the U.S. We can't say enough positive things about its administration, innovative programs, teachers and support staff, who have propelled the district to nationwide accolades despite the fact that it serves a diverse student population - 70 percent of the district's students receive free or reduced-cost lunches - and has been hard hit by draconian state budget cuts.

On Nov. 3, the district, in a special election that will cost at least $300,000, will ask district voters to spend another $92 a year in a flat parcel tax for five years to held ward off further cuts. Property owners over age 65 would be exempt, but they would have to apply for the exemption annually.
