LAKEWOOD For Michelle Rossi, racism was a concept found in history books. The St. Joseph High School sophomore never dreamed her first encounter with prejudice would come from a 5-year-old who refused to make friends with "someone who was brown."
Rossi, who was asked earlier in the year to write an essay about speaking up against injustice, wrote about that experience and won third place in the 2004 Maryknoll Student Essay Contest.
