SAN PEDRO -- Scrawled on the bottom of the ship's suspended canvas bunks, the messages are a jumble of hometown pride, girlfriends' names, cartoons, poems -- and numbers of days left to discharge.

The free-form, doodling expressions by soldiers and Marines were made as they each took a 21-day voyage across the Pacific that would forever mark their lives.

Graffiti Evoke Memories of Vietnam Era

It was the mid-1960s.

Their destination, Vietnam.

From the nonsensical to the profound and clever -- and sometimes political -- the messages have been salvaged as part of the Vietnam Graffiti Project. A portion of the collection debuts as an exhibit this week running through the summer at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro.
