Summary


People who suffer a life-threatening illness often are rushed to the nearest emergency room at hospitals that may or may not be staffed with the best doctors and surgeons in their field.

An accident victim who needs a craniotomy, or brain surgery, for example, can only hope his caregivers are up to the task. At one hospital in Northern California, however, that patient would face a 40 percent chance of dying in the hospital.
