LONG BEACH -- In 2002, Damy Tha, newly immigrated from Cambodia, began her freshman year at Renaissance High School without ever having used a computer.

Tha, who arrived in the United States that year, was shy and knew little English. She wasn't accustomed to having to ask teachers questions to clarify lessons. In Cambodia, her teachers recognized when she was confused.
