LONG BEACH - The Long Beach Board of Education on Tuesday may declare vacant the seat of controversial school board member Michael Shane Ellis and order a special election in December to pick a replacement, district officials said Thursday.

Ellis, who earlier this month announced his intention to resign effective Sept. 1, was elected in 2006 to represent the residents of District 3 in downtown Long Beach.
