In an effort to avert a strike that could halt the flow of cargo coming through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, talks continued late into Saturday night between shipping companies and their clerical workers, who had authorized a strike if talks break down.

The 900 members of the Office Clerical Unit, Marine Clerks Association, Local 63, ILWU unanimously agreed to sanction the walkout if a contract agreement was not reached when their existing one expired Saturday at midnight, said John Fageaux, president of the Office Clerical Unit Local 63.
