LONG BEACH - A Long Beach newspaper publisher on trial for obstructing a police officer testified in his own defense Wednesday, saying he had been treated differently than other journalists because of his "history of speaking out against the Long Beach Police Department."

John "Jay" Beeler, who writes an opinion column in the biweekly Beachcomber, denied that he had been belligerent or intoxicated when he encountered Officer Matthew Gjersvold in March 2007, while trying to photograph a deadly fire at the Galaxy Tower condominiums, 2999 E. Ocean Blvd.
