Lbusd Runner-Up for Broad Prize
The Long Beach Unified School District won $250,000 in college scholarships for being a runner-up for the 2009 Broad Prize, it was announced Wednesday. The LBUSD, one of five finalists for the award, lost out to the winner, The Aldine Independent School District in Texas.
Bonnie Lowenthal Lobbies for Long Beach Funds in Washington
LONG BEACH - Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal joined a delegation of state lawmakers this week who advocated for California's interests in Washington, D.C. "It's important to keep California in everybody's mind," Lowenthal said by phone from her hotel room after meetings on Capitol Hill. "It would be unwise to stay home and hope for the best."

Prostate Cancer Support Group Begins
Long Beach. Community Hospital of Long Beach is starting a Man to Man Prostate Cancer Support Group beginning Oct. 15 and continuing monthly on the third Thursday of each month. The LBUSD, which was among five districts vying for the award, lost out to Texas' Aldine Independent School District, which will receive $1 million in college scholarships. The other runners-up - like the LBUSD - each will get $250,000 in scholarships.
Batts Could Get Big Raise As Oakland Police Chief
LONG BEACH - Police Chief Anthony Batts could get a $24,198 pay boost when he leaves Long Beach to take the helm of the Oakland Police Department, according to Oakland city documents. The Oakland City Council is scheduled to vote on Batts' contract Tuesday, potentially authorizing a $255,000 annual salary, which would be composed of a base salary of $221,000 plus education bonuses.

Mother Held in Child Stabbings
WESTMINSTER - A Garden Grove woman stabbed her daughters, ages 3 and 5, with a kitchen knife at a relative's home in Westminster on Wednesday and then stabbed herself, police said. The woman was holding one of her daughters in her arms and both were covered in blood when officers arrived in the 14000 block of Starsia Street just after 6:30 a.m., according to Westminster police. The officers took the girl from her mother and detained the mother without incident, police said.
