Monday's Letters to the Editor

'Investment' Bells should go off every time a politician uses the word "investment." It is usually nothing more than a verbal ploy to hide the ball. That certainly seems true in Mayor Bob Foster's recent comments regarding what he feels is the need for "investment" in infrastructure. While we need to find money to put into long- term infrastructure maintenance, his comments regarding a ballot measure to raise taxes will do nothing to improve the crumbling infrastructure of our city.

Dan Walters: Bill to Regulate 'Diploma Mills' Stalls

A legislative staff analysis of Senate Bill 823 declares that during the 1980s, California acquired the reputation of being "the diploma mill capital of the world." That's not quite true. There were a couple of states, including neighboring Arizona, with worse reputations as redoubts for private, for-profit, trade and professional schools that charged big fees to students and offered little educational value. But California was right up there as a haven for diploma mills.
